Film production in Germany

Why Film in Germany?

Germany offers an extraordinary variety of filming locations—from historic castles and world-class museums to modern cityscapes, Alpine peaks, Rhine Valley vineyards, and North Sea coastlines. Iconic Berlin locations include the Brandenburg Gate and Museum Island, among the most sought-after filming sites in Europe.

A rich mix of geography, culture, and infrastructure makes Germany one of the industry's most versatile destinations. Strong incentives and advanced facilities support productions of every scale.

Historical Sites

UNESCO sites including Cologne Cathedral, Sanssouci Palace, Bamberg Old Town, and Roman ruins in Trier suit prestige productions.

Coastal Scenery

North Sea and Baltic Sea coastlines, Rügen Island, and Sylt provide waterfronts and dramatic seascapes for luxury shoots.

Modern Cities

Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, and Frankfurt offer contemporary architecture and vibrant street life.

Diverse Landscapes

Bavarian Alps, Black Forest, and Rhine Valley vineyards deliver multiple looks within easy reach of world-class transport.

Incentives and Rebates for Filmmakers

Germany delivers exceptional value as your filming destination through established locations, experienced crews, and comprehensive financial incentives. Government-backed rebate programs reduce operational costs across feature films, television, and commercial content.

You gain immediate budget relief through structured rebate systems for domestic and international productions, keeping creative vision intact while optimising spend.

Rebate for International Productions

The Tax Rebate for International Productions (film incentive) Germany's DFFF and GMPF programs deliver a 30% non-repayable grant on qualifying German production costs. DFFF II, designed for production service providers working with international projects, supports features with a minimum €8 million in German production costs and a cap of €25 million per project. DFFF I covers domestic and co-productions with a cap of €5 million per project.

Eligibility and Application Process

Applications must be submitted to the FFA at least six weeks before principal photography begins. Detailed budgets, financing plans, scripts, and crew documentation are required. Partnering with experienced German production services keeps submissions compliant and on schedule.

Additional Regional Incentives

We combine national DFFF rebates with targeted regional programs, including Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and FilmFernsehFonds Bayern. Combined federal and regional support can reach up to 50–60% of qualifying German expenditure. From 2026, annual federal funding doubles to €250 million across DFFF and GMPF programs.
