Common Questions
Is the German incentive a grant or a tax credit?
It is a non-repayable cash grant on approved German production costs — not a tax credit. The DFFF (I and II) and the GMPF each refund up to 30% of qualifying spend, and the federal grant can be layered with Germany's regional film funds. A national film tax credit has been proposed but is not yet in force.
When will I receive the grant?
The FFA pays the grant after wrap, once your final cost report has been certified by a qualified auditor and approved. You secure a provisional grant decision before shooting and the payout follows the audit.
Is there a cap on the grant amount?
Yes, and it varies by fund: up to €5 million per project under DFFF I, up to €25 million under DFFF II, and up to €20 million per season for high-end series under the GMPF.
Do I need a German production company?
Yes. The federal grants are applied for through a German producer or production-services company. Fixers in Germany can serve as your local partner and handle all requirements.
